MCC praise Piccadilly Basin with Built in Quality Award
Town Centre Securities’ £250M Piccadilly Basin scheme has received further acclaim after the BDP Architects, Engineers and Designers Northern Headquarters building within the development was awarded a Manchester City Council Built in Quality Award.The BDP designed building, which holds a 2006 BREEAM Excellent rating and is home to the city centre’s first ‘living roof’, beat off stiff competition from some 2700 buildings to win one of the coveted awards which show recognition for outstanding buildings within the region. Judging criteria includes consistency of construction standards, energy conservation, compliance to building regulations and recognition for environmental awareness.
In recognition of the contribution that energy efficient buildings and the use of sustainable building materials make to minimising carbon emissions, the BDP designed building, along with an extension to St Brigid’s School, was also singled out for an additional environmental sustainability award.
Councillor Neil Swannick, Executive Member for Environment, who presented the awards, said; “It’s a real privilege to present these awards to the winners. The Built In Quality Awards have become synonymous with the very best of building in Manchester. The vital contribution of builders and contractors is often overlooked when accolades are given out. I hope this award will inspire all those working in the city’s construction industry to new heights.
“The Council is committed to making Manchester the Greenest City in the UK. The design of the built environment is a major contributor to this objective. Sustainable design and construction provides new buildings and refurbishments that promote environmental, social and economic gains now and for the future.”
