ABINGDON STREET MARKET IN BLACKPOOL REFURBISHMENT COMPLETE
On Saturday 2 June, the Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Sylvia Taylor will officially re-launch Abingdon Street Market at 12.30pm following refurbishment work to the frontage. To celebrate the completion of the work and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee there will be fun activities from 10am – 2pm including street entertainers and Radio Wave will be broadcasting live from the market and giving away £50 every hour between 10am and 2pm.
Improvement work to the historic market, located in the heart of Blackpool town centre between Abingdon Street and Cedar Square included restoring the mock Tudor main frontage with its half timbering and new shop fronts.
The work was funded with the help of a grant from Townscape Heritage Initiative through Blackpool Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund .
Built orginally as the town’s police station in 1862 by TH Smith, the main contractor for parts of the Winter Gardens, the building originally included offices, four shops and a builders yard to the rear. It was not until 1928 , with the construction of the main hall with its belfast truss roof, that the building became a market hall.
Today, the market has more than 60 individual stalls and traders which offer quality fresh fruit, meat and fish, stylish clothing and linen, fashionable jewellery, cosmetics, accessories, hair and beauty and many other popular consumer goods.
The market remained open throughout the three month refurbishment work.
The market is owned and managed by property investment and development company Town Centre Securities. David Donkin, Associate Director for Town Centre Securities PLC said: “It’s great to see this phase of work complete which significantly improves the look of the market and makes this part of Abingdon Street more attractive. We are commited to up-grading this important and historic market hall and will continue to invest in this busy town centre market".
The Abingdon Street Market manager, Bob Littlewood said: “The Abingdon Street Market is a thriving hub of activity popular with locals and tourists. We offer a traditional market with a range of stalls which appeals to those that want an alternative to supermarkets and shops in the centre of the town".
